Weathering the Storm
Tough situations destroy some people. Others meet the challenge and continue on to better times. A look at the challenges our community faces, and a glimpse of a bright future on the horizon.
Have you ever been on a boat on a beautiful day? It’s fun, isn’t it? The sun is shining, the temperature perfect, skies are clear, the water is calm. You kick back, maybe even pop a brewskie. Then out of the blue – KAPOWEE! A storm hits. What the heck? Where did that come from? What do we do? There is only one thing to do. Weather the storm.
For some that means to just sit tight and hang on. But there are a few on board who need to navigate, to make the right moves at the right time. A few take the extra responsibility to keep everyone on board safe and sound. As your Board of Directors that is what we have done. We’ve weathered other storms, and we have taken the responsibility to use our skill and experience to help us all to safety through this storm.
Seriously, we have all been through at least one storm together. Remember when our insurance premium spiked and we had to pay the special assessment? Even worse: remember the entire year we paid $355 a month!!?? No one wants to go through that again. But the storm we’ve been weathering the past year is not an ordinary storm. It is the perfect storm. At least 3 different “weather fronts” are upon us at one time: 1) foreclosures, 2) escalated insurance costs, and 3) unemployment. BAM!
Up to now we’ve been bailing the water out of the boat to keep us from capsizing. Yet we still have a way to go before we are safe at port. There are lots of tricky waters ahead. Without a plan, and skilled hands on deck, we could easily be in trouble again. We are paying close attention to the signs: delinquencies, an aging water pipe system, distressed properties and depreciating home values, the risks of inadequate insurance coverage, and the list goes on. We are watching those conditions carefully and we have plans. And the ultimate plan? We want to enjoy life in a stable, beautiful community once again. We just need to weather the storm a little bit longer, and you need a crew you can rely on. We are gratified that you have entrusted us with that task.
All hands on deck. Jo-
